The Som is the oldest bar & grill in downtown Burlington, Iowa. For over 70 years, the restaurant has served quality food and offered a laid-back nostalgic atmosphere for locals and out-of-town guests.
With new ownership came the desire for a new, updated look for the The Som. Owner Eric Lee wanted to combine modern changes with the same nostalgic atmosphere that resonated with customers.
To keep a modern-meets-nostalgic theme, designer Brandy Swartz decided to incorporate historic photographs from downtown Burlington. To add a personal touch, she chose to showcase a photograph that hung on The Som’s walls for many years: an image of the previous owner’s grandfather.
Murals Your Way recommended printing the images on Vinyl HD – Texture due to its durability, fire rating, and excellent print quality. Because the murals would be placed in high traffic areas, protective topcoat was added.
The mix of old and new brings a fresh, energized look to the Som while retaining its familiar charm. The wall murals stand out as art pieces as well as conversation starters among customers.
Murals Your Way was the first and only custom wallpaper company I would ever use! The customer service was spectacular and allowed me to feel confident with the task of taking a very old photograph and turning it into the exact vision I had in my mind. — Brandy Swartz
