To celebrate Avon Park’s deep baseball heritage, the Avon Park Historical Society transformed a new museum exhibit using a series of murals created from restored archival imagery. The murals now surround visitors with more than a century of local baseball history, creating an immersive environment that connects artifacts, stories, and community pride.
Background
The Avon Park Baseball Museum is a new 1,600-square-foot exhibit located within the historic Avon Park Depot Museum in Avon Park, Florida. Operated by the Avon Park Historical Society, the museum officially opened on February 7, 2026 after several years of fundraising and construction. The exhibit celebrates more than 100 years of baseball history in the community, highlighting everything from local high school championship teams to Major League legends connected to the city. Avon Park’s baseball legacy dates back to the late 1920s, when the St. Louis Cardinals held spring training at the city’s Cardinal Field (now Charles R. Head Field), attracting famous players such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Dizzy Dean. Today, the museum preserves these stories and artifacts inside the restored 1926 railroad depot that once welcomed visitors arriving in the growing Florida town.
Visitors are greeted even before entering the museum by striking hand-painted exterior murals that celebrate the city’s baseball heritage, along with three oversized baseball-shaped bollards installed beside the museum’s Main Street sign—setting the stage for the immersive exhibits inside.

For the Avon Park Baseball Museum expansion, designer Diana Ries of Diana Ries Designs created an eight-panel mural series that forms the visual backbone of the exhibit space. Each mural combines archival photographs, historical timelines, and storytelling elements to guide visitors through more than a century of baseball history in Avon Park.
The murals were designed to serve as the foundation for the museum’s displays, providing context and visual impact behind artifacts, uniforms, and memorabilia. By integrating restored historical imagery with modern design techniques, the murals help visitors understand the significance of the items on display while creating a cohesive narrative throughout the exhibit.
Because the museum was being constructed at the same time the murals were being designed, the wallcoverings became an integral part of the environment rather than a decorative addition. The result is a space where visitors are surrounded by the history of Avon Park baseball the moment they walk through the door.
What Was The Goal Of The Project?
The primary goal of the project was to create an immersive environment that would bring Avon Park’s baseball legacy to life. Rather than relying solely on framed artifacts and small displays, the design team wanted the walls themselves to become storytelling tools.
Large-scale murals allowed the museum to combine imagery, historical context, and design into cohesive exhibits that establish atmosphere and guide visitors through the space. By presenting historic moments, legendary players, and community achievements at mural scale, the museum creates a stronger emotional connection for visitors of all ages.
Ultimately, the goal was to transform the exhibit into a visual experience that celebrates local heritage while making the history of baseball in Avon Park engaging and accessible.
Which Material Did You Use?
For the mural series, the design team selected Vinyl HD – Texture Mural material. This material was chosen for its durability, ease of installation, and ability to reproduce historical imagery with clarity and depth at large scale.
Because the murals incorporate restored archival photographs that were originally small or damaged prints, maintaining image detail and color accuracy was essential. The textured vinyl material provided a professional, museum-quality finish while ensuring the displays would remain durable in a public environment.
The murals were installed by a professional installer to ensure precise alignment and a seamless presentation across the large wall panels.
The Reveal:
The completed installation transformed the Avon Park Baseball Museum into an immersive historical environment where the walls themselves tell the story of the community’s baseball legacy. The eight-panel mural series now serves as the visual backbone of the exhibit, surrounding visitors with large-scale historical imagery that connects artifacts, uniforms, and memorabilia to the stories behind them.
